Lighting for hospitality and offices
In a business space, light does two things at once: it has to work, and it tells visitors who you are. A restaurant with harsh light feels like a canteen, an office with only ceiling panels like a waiting room. With a few choices in advance, you get both right.
Hospitality: atmosphere per table
- Above the tables: a pendant lamp per table or group of tables, low enough to turn the table into an island. Keep to 75 to 85 centimetres above the top, just as at home.
- Along the walls: wall lights add depth and make the room warm in the evening, without the ceiling light having to be bright.
- At the bar: a row of pendants above the bar draws attention and gives light to work by.
- Dimmable: lunch calls for different light than dinner. A dimmable installation per zone lets you adjust the atmosphere through the day.
Choose warm white, 2700 kelvin, for the guest area. It shows food and skin at their best. See which light colour per room.
Hotels: the first impression
The lobby determines how a guest remembers the hotel. A large statement above reception or in a void, wall lights in the corridors, and bedside lamps in the rooms. See lighting in a void and how high a lamp hangs beside the bed.
Office: functional and representative
- Workstations: sufficient, even light without glare on the screen. Slightly cooler light, around 3000 to 4000 kelvin, keeps people alert. See lighting for the workspace.
- Meeting room: a long pendant above the meeting table gives focus and presence.
- Reception: here it can be warmer and more striking. This is where clients come in.
What to arrange in advance
- Maintenance: how will you reach the lamps to clean them? Think about this especially in a void or above a bar.
- Burning hours: commercial lamps burn many more hours. LED lighting saves a lot on electricity; see what LED lighting costs in electricity per year.
- Consistency: in a large space all lamps should have the same light colour, otherwise it looks restless.
- A lighting plan: fix the connection points before finishing; see making a lighting plan during a renovation.
